3 Problems Which May Require A Root Canal

Oakhurst family dentist

Hello California, let’s talk about the root canal procedure (“endodontic therapy” in dentist – speak). The root canal may be the most cringe-worthy dental treatment commonly done today, but it is important that dental patients in the Medera, Selma, and Oakhurst areas know what is happening during this anxiety – inducing, though routine, procedure.

At the center of each tooth is a very small tissue called the pulp. This thread-like tissue can become damaged due to a:

An injury to a tooth
A very deep cavity
A crack in the tooth

If this tissue becomes damaged or infected, it can build up at the root tip inside the jawbone and form an abscess. If left untreated, this can actually destroy the bone around the tooth and cause serious discomfort.

When an endodontist, oral surgeon, or general dentist in Clovis or Fresno performs a root canal, the dead or diseased pulp is taken out, the space that is left is cleaned and then it is shaped and filled. This eliminates the need for a diseased tooth to be pulled and continued cosmetic dentistry to fill in the gap.

Hi. I’m Dentist Art Mirelez of Mirelez Wellness Dental in Fresno. I hope that today’s Clovis dental blog post has helped you to better understand root canals. I want my patients to have the best oral health possible and accurate dental information. I also want them to look their best, so if you have any questions about a smile makeover, dental implants, or teeth whitening, please give us a call at 559-761-1871.

At Mirelez Wellness Dental we offer:

cosmetic dentistry
dental implants
porcelain veneers
teeth whitening

All in one location, one doctor, one appointment

Dental Bridge vs Dental Implant

Fresno DentalHello Fresno visitors, welcome to Mirelez Wellness Dental. Let’s talk about a tooth replacement option common in Clovis: dental bridges.

While dental bridges have restored smiles for thousands of Clovis dental patients, they are not problem free. Many CA – California people with dental bridges find it impossible to keep the small areas around the bridge clean. This is not surprising because it is hard to get toothbrush bristles or dental floss under the bridge.

Of course detrimental bacteria has no trouble moving in and taking over without the Fresno dental patient even knowing it. When the decay reaches the roots of the surrounding teeth, it is not only painful, the person is at risk of losing those teeth also.

That is one reason why a dental implant is superior to a dental bridge. Most Clovis people with missing teeth are great candidates for dental implants.

A dental implant looks just like the beautiful tooth restoration on a high-quality dental bridge, but the important part is what you don’t see.

A dental implant is screwed directly into the jaw bone. It is not attached to teeth like the dental bridges traditionally used in Clovis. In a way, a dental implant is a more conservative tooth replacement because it leaves the adjacent teeth intact. The bone and gum tissue mesh permanently with the titanium post that serves as the replacement tooth root.

Dental implants do not have the same decay risk as the teeth that anchor dental bridges. Of course patients with dental implants need to brush and floss, but cleaning a dental implant is usually no more difficult than cleaning a normal tooth.

Dental implants have a far better track record in CA – California than dental bridges. With proper care, a dental implant can last a lifetime for smile-smart Clovis dental patients.

At Mirelez Wellness Dental, dental implants can replace one or more teeth providing durability, beauty, and natural function.  Additionally, they can also serve as anchors for full or partial dentures. No more embarrassing slipping!

If you want more details about dental implants, I invite you to call Mirelez Wellness Dental at 559-761-1871. I am Dentist Art Mirelez. Call today to schedule a dental implant consultation. A remarkable smile can be yours with dental implants.

Unexplained Headaches Or Jaw Pain?

unexplained jaw pain

Hello! I’m Art Mirelez, DDS, FICOI, FAGD, of Mirelez Wellness Dental in Fresno. I have been practicing quality general and cosmetic dentistry since 2003. Today’s post focuses on malocclusion, or bad bite.

Malocclusion is the dental term for a problem in the way your top and bottom teeth come together. The ideal bite is when the upper teeth are slightly forward of the lower teeth. You have probably heard of “overbites” and “underbites” but the two arches can be misaligned in many other ways as well. Crowded teeth can also cause a bad bite, as well as the opposite situation – teeth that are too far apart.

If the misalignment is very slight, there are often no related issues. However, if the malocclusion is moderate to severe, the patient is at risk for many other health issues such as difficulty chewing and speaking, headaches, hearing problems, increased decay, jaw pain, and gum disease.

The domino effect of these issues can get pretty serious. For example, chewing difficulty can trigger ulcers and gum disease increases the risk of stroke and heart disease. Consider also how these problems can impact a patient’s emotional well-being and ability to perform their job.

Putting health issues aside, these problems can get pretty costly to treat.

There are several effective treatments for malocclusion, but first you need a diagnosis. If you suspect that you have a misaligned bite, I hope this post has given you some good reasons to communicate with Dentist Art Mirelez. Call 559-761-1871 to schedule a consultation and exam.

What Does A Missing Tooth Say About You?

Clovis Mini-Implants When you meet someone in Clovis who is missing a front tooth, what does that say to you? Do you wonder if they were in an accident? Do you automatically start making assumptions about their income, level of education and overall physical health?

Though it is extremely unfair, we are often judged (and misjudged) by our appearance. Even if a person is impeccably dressed and groomed, a missing front tooth detracts from the overall pleasing impression.

Here is a personal story from a woman who lost a tooth:

I lost my job and along with it my dental insurance, then a month later, one of my front teeth. It has been very hard to find work…. and I know the missing tooth has cost me several jobs.”

A missing tooth can be a big deal.

Dental implants not only restore oral health, they restore self-confidence. Dental implants are a permanent solution for missing teeth. Studies have shown that after more than 20 years, the vast majority of dental implants placed by oral and maxillofacial surgeons continue to function at peak performance. If properly cared for, dental implants can last a lifetime.

Not all cosmetic dental procedures are as extreme as teeth implants. There are many minimally-invasive remedies for unattractive smiles.

Porcelain veneers instantly provide a perfect, gleaming tooth surface for Clovis patients with broken or discolored teeth. Tooth whitening is a quick and affordable dentistry procedure in Medera that achieves dramatic results without requiring the removal of any tooth structure. What You Need To Know About Oral Cancer

Fresno oral cancer screening

During routine dental examinations, your dentist may look for signs of oral cancer. Oral cancer refers to cancers in the tongue, mouth, lips, jaw, and throat. Many Fresno dental patients don’t realize the seriousness of oral cancer. The American Cancer Society estimates that over 39,000 people will get oral cancer this year.1

Consider this sobering news from the Oral Cancer Foundation:
“The death rate for oral cancer is higher than that of cancers which we hear about routinely such as cervical cancer, Hodgkin’s lymphoma, laryngeal cancer, cancer of the testes, and endocrine system cancers such as thyroid, or skin cancer (malignant melanoma).”2

When your dentist performs an oral cancer screening during your dental examination, he/she will look for red or white spots, bleeding, lumps, difficulty swallowing, loose teeth, any color changes, and mouth sores. Is is important to tell your dentist if your bite has changed, if you have sores that won’t heal, and prolonged hoarseness. An earache in only one ear can also be an indicator.

The existence of any of these symptoms does not mean you have oral cancer, as they can be caused by any number of other conditions. However, if your dentist does discover something unusual, he/she may order additional tests or refer you to a medical doctor for further diagnosis and treatment if necessary.

It’s probably no surprise that the main risk factor for oral cancer is tobacco use. This includes all forms, not just cigarettes. Those who consume excessive amounts of alcohol are also more likely to contract this deadly cancer. People with HPV, a sexually-transmitted virus, have a higher risk and prolonged sun exposure to lips makes lip cancer more likely. All of these previously mentioned factors are lifestyle-related and, to a great extent, preventable. People who don’t use tobacco or drink heavily are statistically far less likely to get oral cancer and a host of other health problems.

For more information about oral cancer screening, contact Mirelez Wellness Dental at 559-761-1871. If you are looking for an experienced dentist who provides comprehensive general, restorative, and cosmetic dentistry, we invite you to schedule a consultation with Dentist Art Mirelez. Dentist Mirelez has been serving the Fresno area since 2003.

Top 5 Dos And Don’ts Of Dental Hygiene

Dental Hygiene

Welcome to our blog and thanks for stopping by. Mirelez Wellness Dental wants to offer you some easy hints when caring for your teeth.

1.Do… remember you are just wiping the plaque away before it turns to tartar. A gentle toothbrushing at the correct angle can gently wipe the bacteria away. Once plaque has settled into tartar, no amount of scrubbing at home can responsibly remove it.
Don’t… scrub your teeth and gums until your gums recede and expose parts of your tooth you don’t want exposed.

2.Do… remember your gums need to be cared for. Proper brushing and regular flossing can keep your gums healthy and strong.
Don’t… wait to see your a dental professional about sore or bleeding gums, tooth sensitivity or mouth sores.

3.Do… create a routine for brushing and flossing that leaves ample time to spend a full two minutes gently cleaning all the nooks and crannies of your delicate mouth.
Don’t… forget to have a new floss package ready to use when your current one runs out. Waiting days to get to the store for more can disrupt a good routine.

4.Do… make regular dental visits for cleaning and examination by a professional. Call Mirelez Wellness Dental to set up your initial consultation today. 559-761-1871 We’ve got the phones ready! Cancer screenings, cavity checks and removal of tartar from the teeth are vital to maintaining a healthy mouth.
Don’t… worry if you don’t have the healthiest of mouths. Mirelez Wellness Dental can help you get back on track. Whether you’re looking for cosmetic dentistry, dental implants, or porcelain veneers, we can restore what has been lost or counsel with you on the best options. If teeth whitening or sedation dentistry is what it takes, then we are equipped and ready to serve the Medera, Selma, Oakhurst communities.

5.Do… enjoy your mouth and all the wonders it is capable of.
Don’t… put off coming in to find out about the possibility and cost of cosmetic dentistry, implants, veneers, braces, etc.

All in one location, one doctor, one appointment!

3 Reasons Not To Skip A Dental Checkup

cosmetic dental Fresno

Life gets busy. Sometimes it seems impossible to keep up with everything you “gotta do”. At Mirelez Wellness Dental, we understand that. But we urge you to think twice before you cancel or postpone a dental checkup because you think it’s less important than the other twenty items on your to-do list.

Twice-yearly dental exams are crucial for keeping your smile in optimal shape!

“But my teeth feel fine.”
We’ve heard this excuse. The fact is that no news isn’t necessarily good news. Dental issues can be progressing without you being aware of it.

1. Your Gums May Be Receding
Gum recession doesn’t happen all at once. Gum tissue can move back almost imperceptibly until teeth and bone are in danger.

2. Decay May Be Lurking
When the acids in plaque start drilling into a tooth, we usually don’t feel it until it has passed through the enamel and dentin and hits the nerve. Ouch! By that time, there is a crater in the tooth. Regular cleanings remove plaque before it can do any deterioration.

3. Prevent Oral Cancer
About 50,000 people will be diagnosed with oral cancer this year.1 Dentist Mirelez will screen for oral cancer during your exam. As with all types of cancer, early diagnosis is indispensable.

After your entire mouth has been examined, Dentist Mirelez will detail what is required moving forward. Whether that’s flossing more often or discussing major fixes such as braces, we will be sure that you get all the information you need to ensure your smile is bright and beautiful! Scheduling twice-yearly exams with Art Mirelez at Mirelez Wellness Dental will ensure you avoid acute dental issues.

What’s New At Your Fresno Dentist Office?

Affordable Smile Makeovers In Clovis

Hello friends of Mirelez Wellness Dental, today we’re talking about the modern dental office in CA – California. Dentistry is a field of continual innovation. There are always new and improved ways to help Clovis residents have the healthiest and most beautiful smile possible.

Many dental offices in the Medera, Selma, and Oakhurst areas have found that switching to digital X-rays makes for more efficient appointments. Also, the dental images can more easily be stored in a patient’s computer file and compared with past images.

Diode lasers are innovative instruments that allow your Clovis area dentist to detect bacteria levels in your mouth as well as find and treat cavities.

For Fresno patients interested in cosmetic or restorative dentistry, CAD (computer-assisted design) technology can allow procedures that involve crowns and bridges to be done in fewer appointments.

If you are considering a full smile makeover and want veneers, the newer, thinner veneers are just as strong and beautiful, but more of the original tooth is left intact.

I’m Dentist Art Mirelez. I want my patients to have the best oral health possible. My practice, Mirelez Wellness Dental, is located at 5492 N Palm Ave, and our genuine dental team is always ready to welcome new patients. We offer the following services:

Mouthwash Facts In Fresno

Mouthwash Facts In Fresno

Hi, I am Dentist Art Mirelez.  Thanks for visiting my Mirelez Wellness Dental blog. In today’s post I would like to discuss mouthwash. Many California residents use mouthwash to freshen their breath and help retard tooth decay. Mouthwash should never be used exclusively though, good oral hygiene starts with thorough tooth brushing and flossing. Mouthwash is an optional tool in your dental hygiene tool box.

It is important for CA – California residents to know what kind of mouthwash they are using. Some mouthwashes merely mask bad breath while others help reduce the bacteria that causes plaque and bad breath.

If you are one of the Fresno residents that suffers from bad breath it is important to choose a mouthwash that contains ingredients that help prevent tooth decay such as fluoride. But you also need to use caution when using mouthwashes because many of the ingredients are dangerous when the recommended amount of mouthwash is exceeded.

Some of the poisonous components are chlorhexidine gluconate, ethanol, hydrogen peroxide, and methyl salicylate. If you experience throat pain, vomiting, headache, or abdominal pain after using mouthwash, seek medical help immediately. The National Poison Control Center (1-800-222-1222) can answer questions about mouthwash ingredients.

At Mirelez Wellness Dental we want everyone to have great smelling breath, but to use caution when treating their bad breath. Make sure to read your mouthwash label and follow all instructions given.

In addition to preventative dental care, Mirelez Wellness Dental offers a wide range of cosmetic dentistry procedures. If you are anxious to have a whiter, brighter smile talk to Mirelez Wellness Dental about teeth whitening. Mirelez Wellness Dental also provide holistic dentistry.

At Mirelez Wellness Dental we have been improving the smiles of residents in Fresno, Clovis and the surrounding areas since 2003. Contact us today to schedule a consultation.

You May Have Gingivitis

Fresno Dentistry Every person’s mouth provides a cozy home for over 600 types of bacteria. If you are dedicated to oral hygiene and have healthy gums, these microbes usually don’t influence your health. However, if you have gum disease, bacteria can enter your bloodstream through your gums and cause troubles.

The first sign of gingivitis is swollen, sore gums.

Gingivitis is the term for Stage 1 gum disease. At Mirelez Wellness Dental, we routinely discover gingivitis in patients who are not even aware that they have the condition.

It is important for people to understand that it is not normal for gums to bleed when they are brushed or flossed. Sore, swollen, or bleeding gums are a tip off that something is out of order.

If you haven’t had an oral examination in a while and live in the Clovis area, call Mirelez Wellness Dental at 559-761-1871.

Dr. Mirelez will perform an intensive examination of your teeth and gums and take time to discuss the results and recommendations with you.

Mirelez Wellness Dental is a full-service dental practice at 5492 N Palm Ave in Fresno. We provide comprehensive general and cosmetic dentistry for patients who live in Fresno and the nearby communities of Medera, Selma and Oakhurst.

During your dental consultation, we can discuss any cosmetic or restorative procedures in which you are interested. Some of the procedures that we use to achieve dazzling smiles are porcelain veneers, orthodontics, dental implants, and tooth bleaching.

If you haven’t had your teeth cleaned in a while, we invite you to schedule a comprehensive cleaning. Our hygienists are skilled professionals who carry out the ultimate in dental deep-cleanings.

Oral health and overall health go hand in hand. Schedule a dental consultation today by calling 559-761-1871.
