Why Sports Drinks Put Teeth At Risk

Fresno Dental

Many health-conscious individuals in the Clovis area exercise regularly, and many turn to sports drinks for hydration.

While it’s true that they help preserve electrolyte levels in the body (and pose fewer health risks than energy drinks), their acidity can erode tooth enamel. And when tooth enamel erodes, those pearly whites are more susceptible to staining, discoloration, and decay.

Nobody wants stained teeth, so next time you’re at the gym, try substituting water for sports drinks.

If you have already experienced staining and tooth discoloration and would like to know more about porcelain veneers and teeth whitening in Fresno, give Mirelez Wellness Dental a call at 559-761-1871.

We are an outstanding Fresno, CA – California dental practice that offers:

cosmetic dentistry
dental implants
porcelain veneers

Dentist Art Mirelez has been providing first rate dental care since 2003. The genuine staff here can answer any questions you have about vital preventative oral care and cosmetic dentistry procedures such as veneers, gum contouring, invisible braces, tooth-colored fillings and smile transformations.

When Wayward Teeth Take A Crooked Path

Fresno orthodontics

Malocclusion is dental-speak for crooked teeth. When you examine all the different ways numerous 3-dimensional objects can be positioned, it is not surprising that malocclusion presents itself in multiple forms. The number of configurations may surprise you:

When teeth slant forward, it is called upper protrusion, but you may have heard this condition referred to as “buck teeth.”

An overbite occurs when the upper front teeth come down too far over the lower teeth when the mouth is closed. And underbite is the reverse condition – the upper front teeth close farther back than the lower front teeth. An open bite refers to a bite in which the upper don’t overlap the lower teeth. This can be present on the whole bite or just one side.

Tooth rotation is one of the most common forms of malocclusion. Rotated teeth appear as if they are twisting out of place. Tooth rotation can create the illusion of uneven coloring because of the way light reflects off the face of the teeth.

When the upper and lower palate are misaligned to the point where the upper teeth close onto the wrong side of the lower teeth, it is called a cross bite.

In some rare cases – called transposition – teeth erupt in spots where other teeth should be. For example, a canine (pointed tooth) comes in where an incisor (front biting tooth) should be. Can you imagine trying to chew if your teeth have been playing musical chairs?

Many people with crooked teeth are too self-conscious to smile, but aesthetics are not the only issue at play. Crooked teeth can increase the risk of cavities, tooth damage, and TMD temporomandibular joint  (TMJ) disorder. Young children with crooked teeth may have difficulty learning how to speak, and if they can’t chew meat and raw vegetables correctly, they may miss out on necessary nutrients due to a limited diet.

If you or your child has crooked teeth or a misaligned bite, we invite you to schedule an intensive examination straightaway.

When Style And Oral Health Collide

Oral piercing is a popular form of body-art in Fresno, but just because it’s popular doesn’t mean it’s safe. I’m Art Mirelez, a dentist serving the Medera, Selma, and Oakhurst areas. When my patients ask me about the safety of oral piercings, I make sure they examine the possible dangerous consequences.

First, patients should know that infection is always a major concern with any piercing, but because the mouth is the perfect environment for breeding bacteria, oral piercings are especially problematic. Your ability to chew, swallow, and speak can also be impaired by an oral piercing.

Oral piercings can lead to an increase in saliva flow and, possibly, excessive drooling, something my dental patients generally want to avoid. (I don’t know anyone in Fresno who thinks drooling is attractive.) It’s also critical to know that chipped or cracked teeth, damage to dental fillings, and metal sensitivity are other possible issues.

Another serious risk associated with piercings that should concern patients is nerve damage. Many people experience temporary numbness after a piercing, but for some, the damage is severe and sensations never return. An injured nerve can also impact facial movements as well as your sense of taste.

If you’ve want to get a tongue bar or lip piercing, please talk to your dentist so you can consider the safest decision possible for your dental health.

If you are looking for an experienced dentist in the Fresno area to count on for accurate information and the highest quality care, we welcome you to Mirelez Wellness Dental. Call 559-761-1871 today to schedule an appointment. We offer dental implants, porcelain veneers, teeth whitening, and more!

We may even convince you that safe, effective cosmetic dentistry such as teeth whitening, veneers, or bonding would be a smarter and safer way to express your personality and boost your confidence. Give us a call today!

Dental Crowns At Mirelez Wellness Dental In Fresno

Dental Crowns at Mirelez Wellness Dental in Fresno Dental crowns have been used in dentistry for over 2000 years. There is evidence that the Etruscans experimented with crowns on teeth using ivory and bone as early as 700 B.C. By 200 A.D., they began using gold crowns to construct artificial teeth. Ancient Egyptians fashioned tooth replacements out of seashells and then hammered them into their gums. (Oral sedation, anyone?)

Porcelain crowns were first used in the 1800s. With the refining of metal casting methods in the 1900s, crown dentistry advanced significantly.

Today, crowns are strong, comfortable and are made to match your surrounding teeth.

Dental crowns (also called caps) cover the entire visible portion of the tooth and are cemented in place. Crowns are used to strengthen teeth that have been worn down or weakened by decay or injury. Crowns are also used to restore the original shape of a tooth or solely to improve the appearance of a tooth.

The most common types of crowns are:

  • All-porcelain (ceramic)
  • Porcelain-fused-to-metal
  • Gold

The material used is determined by several factors. If you suspect you need a crown, want to replace an old crown, or want to learn about other cosmetic dentistry procedures, call Dentist Art Mirelez at 559-761-1871. Mirelez Wellness Dental is located at 5492 N Palm Ave in Fresno. We have been serving patients in the Clovis area since 2003. We can recommend the best tooth restoration or cosmetic dentistry option for you.

Are All Carbs Created Equal?

Diet Changes For Healthier Teeth In Fresno

Hello, I am Dentist Art Mirelez of Mirelez Wellness Dental in Fresno. Today, we are focusing on diet and oral health.

I’m sure you brush and floss regularly and hopefully visit your Fresno dental practice for necessary cleanings, but did you know that making small but vital changes to your diet can improve your oral health?

Most Fresno residents are aware that the sugar found in candy, cookies, juices and sodas can harm your teeth, but some Clovis people don’t realize that all carbohydrates can cause cavities. A handful of pretzels or a piece of pumpernickel bread can have the same effect on your teeth as a fudge brownie.

All carbohydrates break down into simple sugars, which are converted into plaque, which can then cause cavities and gum disease. Carbs are naturally sticky and adhere to your teeth. Eating carbs with meals is healthier than eating them as snacks because more saliva is generated at mealtime. Saliva helps prevent food particles from sticking to teeth.

At Mirelez Wellness Dental, I continue to see tooth damage caused by sodas and sports drinks. If you choose to drink them, sip them through a straw. By limiting the contact of these drinks on your teeth, you will help preserve your enamel.

Another essential way Clovis residents can improve their oral health is to get 800mg of calcium a day for men and 1,000mg for women under 50. Calcium helps strengthen your jaw and secure your teeth firmly in the jaw bone.

Diet alone will not prevent cavities and dangerous gum disease for Fresno dental patients, however, wise eating promotes healthy teeth and gums.

My staff and I at Mirelez Wellness Dental are accepting new Fresno general and cosmetic dentistry patients in the 93704 zip code area. I encourage you to call 559-761-1871 today to schedule an exam and cleaning, if required.

Filtered Fresno Water And Oral Health

Filtered Fresno Water And Oral Health

A simple way for Clovis residents to choose beverages that won’t harm their teeth is to keep it simple and make water their go-to drink. However, for safety, thrift, and convenience, many dental patients choose to drink bottled water or filter it themselves at home.

Filtered water can be detrimental to oral health if it doesn’t contain fluoride, which is a great tooth decay preventer.

If you choose bottled water and are wondering if any naturally occurring fluoride has been removed, you can check the label. If you prefer to filter your own tap water, look to see if the American Dental Association has given the filter its seal of approval.

Water filters that carry the ADA seal don’t remove fluoride, so you can be sure that the fluoride is still in your water and benefiting your teeth.

I’m Dentist Art Mirelez, an experienced Fresno dentist serving the Medera, Selma, and Oakhurst areas. I am passionate about helping my patients have healthy mouths and beautiful smiles. Contact us today at 559-761-1871 and we can answer any questions you have about dental health, cosmetic dentistry, or smile makeovers.

4 Oral Ailments To Discuss With Your Fresno Dentist

Bad Breath Treatment Clovis

We all go to our family dentist for check-ups and toothaches, but there are other less-obvious issues that your dentist can help you with. Today, we would like to consider some of the most common oral conditions that should be discussed with your dentist.

1. Bad Breath. Sure, nobody wants to admit that they have bad breath, but bad breath is usually caused by bacteria build-up in the mouth. This means that it might be a symptom of accelerating dental caries. Discuss it with your dentist who can help you overcome this problem. (All of your friends will thank you.)

2. Dry Mouth. Also known as xerostomia, this lack of saliva is very uncomfortable and can predispose dental patients to a host of issues such as cavities and gum disease. Some Fresno residents experience it because of prescription medications or chronic diseases, so make sure to bring a list of current prescriptions with you to your appointment

3. Jaw Issues. If you have a clicking jaw or jaw discomfort, be sure to schedule an appointment with your dentist ASAP! These symptoms can be signs of a harmful oral issue.

4. Teeth Grinding. If you’ve been stressed out and find that you’ve been grinding your teeth (or if your partner tells you that you’re doing it in your sleep!), discuss it with your dentist. A simple mouthguard can safeguard your teeth. If you have suffered damage from grinding such as fractured or chipped teeth, we will give you information about restorative dentistry.

I’m Dentist Art Mirelez of Fresno,
and I want my patients to come to me with all of their oral concerns. Call 559-761-1871 today to schedule an appointment.

Lasering In On Precision Dentistry

top dentist Fresno

The powerful, precise, highly-concentrated beam of light originally known as Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation (LASER) is so ubiquitous that the acronym has now been relegated to lower case.

Lasers are used in everything from weapons to barcode scanners. They have increased efficiency and advanced technology in numerous industries such as communications, manufacturing, and virtually every branch of science. Today’s post focuses on how lasers have influenced dentistry.

Lasers are now used in many technologically-advanced California dental practices for a broad range of services. Lasers allow dentists to be extremely precise when working on both tooth and gum tissue.

Dentists use lasers to:

  • Remove decay while preserving more intact tooth material
  • Firmly attach bonding material to a tooth
  • Remove oral lesions or obtain tissue for biopsies
  • Reshape receded gums
  • Eliminate bacteria while performing root canals
  • Increase the effectiveness of tooth whitening agents

Dental patients benefit with:

  • Fewer stitches – some surgical procedures require no sutures when a laser is used
  • Faster healing
  • Lower risk of infection
  • Decreased damage to surrounding tissue/bone
  • Less pain – eliminates the need for anesthesia in many procedures

Art Mirelez, DDS, FICOI, FAGD, employs advanced dental technology with seasoned ability to serve our valued patients. At Mirelez Wellness Dental, we believe that every man, woman, and child deserves a beautiful smile and a lifetime of oral health.

For questions about laser dentistry, cosmetic dentistry, dental implants or porcelain veneers, call 559-761-1871 today to schedule a consultation at Mirelez Wellness Dental in Fresno. We are located at 5492 N Palm Ave.

5 Reasons To Schedule A Dental Cleaning Today

professional dental cleaning Clovis

1. Protect Your Gums

It’s not only extreme tooth decay that can damage a tooth until it is beyond saving. Gum disease that leads to bone loss is just as dangerous. Gum disease is caused by a buildup of plaque that creates pockets of infection between the gums and tooth roots. This leads to periodontitis, gum recession, and eventual bone loss. A professional cleaning removes the plaque before it can cause the gums to loosen.

2. Prevent Cavities

Even if you brush and floss your teeth morning and night, plaque can accumulate. We have many patients who are faithful brushers but are surprised when our hygienist finds plaque on their teeth.

3. Check for Oral Cancer

The Oral Cancer Foundation relates this unfortunate news: oral cancer claims one life approximately every hour – that’s 48,250 deaths a year.1

4. Oral Health and Overall Health Go Hand in Hand

Your mouth is not a separate entity from the rest of the body, but many men and women treat it that way. Some get regular preventative services for physical conditions but miss their teeth. At Mirelez Wellness Dental, we’ve often wondered about this frequent disconnect. Did you know that the risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes appear to increase with poor oral health? Besides, your lifestyle is completely influenced when you have tooth pain, tooth loss, gum disease, or dentures.

5. It May Be Free

Many CA – California dental insurance plans cover semiannual dental cleanings. Even if you don’t have dental insurance, cleanings are one of the most cost-effective ways to keep prime oral health.

Call 559-761-1871 today to schedule a professional dental cleaning at Mirelez Wellness Dental in Fresno.
