What Is Lurking Under Your Gumline?

Gum Disease Treatment Fresno

Hello Fresno residents! Your overall oral health depends not only on healthy teeth but also healthy gums. Proper oral hygiene helps keep both your teeth and gums in good shape.

When brushing, hold your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle with the bristle tips aimed at the line where the tooth and gum meet. The bristles of a soft toothbrush can clean the food particles in the pockets in front and in back of the tooth, but you need floss to clean between the teeth. Make sure you get the floss into the pocket between the teeth and scrape food particles up and out of the pocket.

Back to toothbrushing: if the toothbrush is not held at the correct angle, the bristles can’t get in the pockets to clean out the bacteria before it turns into enamel-damaging plaque. If plaque multiplies in the pockets around the teeth, the gum will start pulling away. Eventually, the pockets will become too deep for your toothbrush bristles to reach. Unfortunately, the tooth structure below the gumline is more susceptible to decay than the enamel above the gumline.

There is more than one way to damage your teeth – even if the visible parts of your teeth are cavity-free, gum disease can cause problems with the parts you can’t see.

I am Dr. Art Mirelez of Mirelez Wellness Dental. My staff and I promote preventative dentistry by working with our patients of all ages to establish essential oral hygiene habits.

If you haven’t had a check-up in a while, or are experiencing gum soreness or recession, call Mirelez Wellness Dental today at 559-761-1871 to schedule a thorough tooth and gum examination in Fresno.

5 Tools For Tooth Transformations

porcelain veneers price Clovis

Too-small teeth. Misshapen teeth. Cracked teeth. Chipped teeth. Spacing irregularities. These issues are all-too-common. But you don’t have to live with them! With the advances in cosmetic dentistry, there are fixes for these vexing tooth troubles!

1. Veneers. (Also called dental laminates or porcelain veneers). These extremely thin shells are custom-made so the size, shape, and color are perfectly matched to your surrounding teeth. The veneers are securely cemented to the front of the teeth to dramatically improve your smile.

2. Bonding. This procedure uses a strong tooth-colored resin to close spaces, repair chips and cracks, or change the shape. The resin is molded into place and then a light is applied to harden the material for secure adherence to the tooth.

3. Recontouring. Minimally-invasive reshaping of a tooth by removing miniature bits of enamel to improve the shape or length. This cosmetic dentistry procedure is sometimes called odontoplasty or slenderizing.

4. Crowns. Most people are familiar with this durable multi-purpose restoration. Natural-looking dental crowns are fabricated in the shape and color of the tooth and cemented into place to fully cover the part of the tooth visible above the gumline.

5. Braces. Patients of all ages are transforming their smiles with unprecedented orthodontia. Before you dismiss this option as too time-consuming or pricey, learn about the new braces now available. Braces are more convenient and discrete than ever before.

Gum Health Affects Risk Of Type 2 Diabetes

gum disease increases diabetes risk Fresno

At Mirelez Wellness Dental, we are concerned not only with the condition of your mouth, but also with how it affects your complete physical health and general well-being.

Today’s post looks at the connection between diabetes and oral health and may be of interest to Fresno residents with diabetes as well individuals who are trying to reduce their risk factors.

Scientists have known for quite some time that people with diabetes have higher rates of gum disease. Maintaining proper blood glucose levels is the key to minimizing the risk of gum disease and related problems for those affected.

Additional research is exploring the reverse relationship. In other words, whether poor oral health increases the risk of developing diabetes. Findings from a long-term study suggests that it does.

“We found that over two decades of follow-up, individuals who had periodontal disease were more likely to develop type 2 diabetes later in life when compared to individuals without periodontal disease.” -Ryan T. Demmer, PhD, MPH1

Additional trials are exploring how tooth and gum health bumps the ability of diabetics to manage the disease.

“Not only are people with diabetes more susceptible to serious gum disease, but serious gum disease may have the potential to affect blood glucose control and contribute to the progression of diabetes.”2

If you have diabetes, it is essential that you see a dentist regularly and are devoted to daily oral hygiene, proper nutrition, and other vital practices. Furthermore, your success in controlling your blood glucose levels will improve your oral health and vice-versa.

If you don’t have a dentist and live in Fresno or the greater Clovis area, I invite you to call me, Art Mirelez, at 559-761-1871. I will perform a thorough examination and one of my hygienists will treat your teeth and gums to a professional dental cleaning. Then we will create a helpful plan for improving and maintaining your dental health for life. I can be a vital member of your healthcare team and will work with your medical doctor, if needed.

Change Your Life In 4 Steps

cosmetic dental and implants

Healthy teeth that work as nature intended are vital for a high quality of life and overall health. Clovis folks who notice dentures know what I’m talking about.

There is no question that dentures are preferable to a completely toothless mouth, but they are not trouble free. Your mouth executes numerous basic functions, each of which can be impaired by the frustrations of dentures.

Dentures can make it difficult to chew and taste food. It’s embarrassing to talk when they are slipping around in your mouth and laughing can dislodge them entirely. They can even make it hard to breathe – and it doesn’t get more basic than that.

Even if you have had dentures for many years, you may be a candidate for dental implants. Dental implants are an uncommonly versatile individually-constructed substitute for dentures.

Dental implants can be used to replace several teeth and/or anchor over dentures. Mini dental implants (also called denture-stabilization implants) allow your dentist to securely attach an appliance so that it won’t slip or irritate gums. Small titanium posts are implanted into the jawbone and fuse with the surrounding bone, assembling a heavy-duty base for an over denture.

Here is the process:

1. Examination and Assessment
During your first visit, your dentist will take x-rays and measure your mouth and the condition of your teeth, gums, and jawbone. Your dentist will assess options with you and together you will a treatment plan.

2. Implant Placement
A complete tooth implant and restoration consists of the actual implant or root replacement, an abutment, and final restoration. The first step is to insert the titanium alloy implant into your jawbone. This is not as difficult or painful as it sounds. Most patients are surprised at how speedy and easy the procedure is.

3. Integration
Implant surgery would not be successful if your jawbone did not welcome an artificial and non-biological tooth root. Amazingly, in the vast majority of cases, the jawbone tightly fuses with the implant to establish an extremely strong foundation for the concluding restoration. It takes from three to six months for your jawbone to work its wondrous magic.

4. Final Restoration
Whether your concluding step is a crown, bridge, or denture, your dentist will work with the lab to fabricate a beautiful and functional restoration. A connecting piece called an abutment attaches the restoration to the artificial root(s). The crown, bridge, or denture is all that is visible at the end of the process. Dental implant restorations are virtually indistinguishable from initial teeth.

Dental implant patients of all ages are excited about the improved quality of life implants deliver.

Mirelez Wellness Dental Takes Care Of Plaque, Calculus, And Cavities

Clovis Guide To Plaque, Calculus, And Cavities

Hi. I’m Dentist Art Mirelez. Welcome to my Fresno dental blog! I find that many of my patients get a couple of dental terms mixed up. Today, I would like to clarify the differences between plaque, calculus, and cavities.

Plaque is a film that covers teeth – a sticky layer of bacteria. You can remove plaque through daily brushing and flossing. However, if it isn’t removed it can build up and harden into calculus.

Calculus, also known as tartar, is hardened plaque that also accumulates minerals from food and saliva. Regular check-ups and cleanings with your Fresno dentist are necessary to remove tartar as well as hard-to-reach plaque.

Plaque and calculus are not cavities, but they can lead to cavities. A cavity is basically a hole in the tooth caused by decay. Because plaque and calculus contain bacteria, the bacteria release acids which accelerate tooth decay and eventually lead to more cavities.

A good rule of thumb for dental patients is this: Avoid plaque to avoid calculus and tartar to avoid tooth decay to avoid cavities. Got it?

I hope you’ve found this helpful, and if you’re in the Medera, Selma, or Oakhurst area and are in need of quality dental care, call our office at 559-761-1871 to schedule an appointment today.

Our genuine staff would love to answer any questions you have about our services, including cosmetic dentistry, teeth whitening, and veneers.

Whitening vs Bleaching At Mirelez Wellness Dental In Fresno

Whitening vs Bleaching At Mirelez Wellness Dental In Fresno

Teeth whitening is a popular cosmetic dental service that Mirelez Wellness Dental provides in-office or through a take home kit. Results vary, but most patients see significant lightening that lasts up to a year. Our teeth whitening patients affirm that a whiter smile improves self confidence and can take years of wear and discoloration away to reveal a brighter smile.

Teeth whitening and teeth bleaching, however, mean two different things. Surface cracks and stains develop on tooth enamel, exposing the yellower dentin below the surface. Discoloration can be the result of the natural aging process, illness, genetics, or dark colored food or drink. Foods and beverages that are both dark colored and acidic – like wine, coffee, and tomato sauce  – have even greater staining power.

Teeth whitener can refer to any product used to remove stains from tooth enamel: toothpaste, do it yourself strips, and some mouthwashes are safe and economical and can whiten teeth with continued, regular use. The extent of whitening varies, and it takes dedicated,  use to see results.

Whitening products that do not contain bleach can usually make teeth two to four shades lighter. These are a good choice for Clovis men and women with sensitive teeth and gums that can react to products containing harsher whitening chemicals. Mirelez Wellness Dental guides pregnant or nursing mothers to elect the non-bleach whitening products.

Teeth bleaching is used to describe a tooth whitening product that contains a form of bleach, either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide, in varying concentrations. For best results, teeth bleaching should be done in-office by your CA – California cosmetic dentist. Bleaching can frequently achieve more noticeable results, sometimes up to seven shades lighter. Intrinsic stains on the dentin, as well as surface stains can be effectively lightened under an experienced Fresno dentist’s supervision.
