At Mirelez Wellness Dental in Fresno CA, maintaining healthy teeth is an important concern for our dental patients. We are devoted to helping you care for your Maintaining healthy teeth requires thorough brushing and flossing each day. Regular visits to the dentist is also necessary for preventing cavities and maintaining proper dental hygiene.
We often forget that maintaining a healthy diet can also be beneficial to your teeth. A diet that includes foods that help your muscles and bones will also help you develop healthy gums and healthy teeth. Examples of foods to include in your diet include foods rich in vitamin B such as breads and cereals. Foods rich in vitamin C, usually fruits and vegetables, help improve the health of your gums. Zinc and magnesium are also good for the health of your teeth and are found in foods like lean beef, fish, and poultry.
Saliva is vital to healthy teeth because it aids in maintaining the pH balance in your mouth. Foods high in fiber also encourage saliva production as does the chewing of sugar-free gum. Gum, however, can damage unhealthy teeth or pull out dental fillings, so always use caution when deciding whether to chew gum.
Just as certain diet choices in the Clovis area can be beneficial to the health of your teeth, others can be harmful. Foods and drinks that are high in sugars – especially soda and energy drinks – are more likely to form the acids that attack your teeth and result in decay. And while table sugar is often associated with the formation of cavities, other sugars such as glucose, fructose, and maltose are also causes, and are often found in juices and sodas. Limiting the consumption of sugars to mealtimes lessens the amount of time your healthy teeth are exposed.
Making good diet choices and limiting between meal sugar consumption can improve the health of your teeth and gums. If you would like to learn how to better care for your healthy teeth in the Fresno CA area, contact Mirelez Wellness Dental to schedule an appointment. We provide family and cosmetic dentistry. In this post we’re talking about the water flosser, also known as interdental cleaner, interdental irrigator, or water jet. Your dentist in Fresno thinks they are a great idea.
The first water-shooting device for cleaning between teeth was invented in the early 1960’s by Colorado dentist Dr. Gerald Moyer and John Mattingly, a hydraulics engineer. The tool is now known by the brand name Waterpik, though many people use the term generically. Since its introduction, several other companies have entered the market with similar products. (Note: Mirelez Wellness Dental does not necessarily endorse any particular brand.)
A water irrigation tool oscillates a stream of water through a small, targeted tube to shoot out bits of food and plaque from around and between teeth. To use it, you insert the tube into your mouth, turn it on, and then lean over the sink with your mouth slightly open to let the water dribble out as you guide the stream of shooting water around the gumline, pausing momentarily at each gap between adjoining teeth.
There have been over 65 studies that have demonstrated the safety and proficiency of water flossing for calculus reduction, plaque biofilm removal, bleeding reduction, inflammation reduction, and gingivitis treatment.
Should I Use a Water Flosser?
If you don’t floss at all, absolutely. If you have periodontal disease, maybe. It may also help you keep your teeth and gums healthy if you have dental appliances.
First, talk to us to acquire an oral care treatment plan that factors in your tooth and gum health, physical dexterity, and lifestyle. The following factors may influence whether we recommend an interdental irrigation device.
Braces or other orthodontic appliances
A physical limitation that diminishes ability to brush and/or floss
Gums that bleed when flossing
Bleeding around dental implants when flossing
Aversion to flossing
The team at Mirelez Wellness Dental would love to help you learn the best techniques for keeping your gums pink and healthy and firmly attached to cavity-free teeth. Set up an appointment with the dentist in Fresno CA today. We provide family and cosmetic dentistry.
This is an essential question occasionally asked by patients at Mirelez Wellness Dental. The answer, however, is “No!” Bleeding is probably a sign that you need to clean your teeth and gums more thoroughly—not leave them alone. It could be a sign of gum disease.
It is practically impossible to clean effectively between teeth without using floss or an interdental brush. If you have never flossed before, your gums might bleed the first few times you use floss. The bleeding may be due to harmful gum inflammation, the beginnings of gum disease. Keep flossing gently and the bleeding ordinarily stops within a week or two.
Gingivitis and the more advanced periodontal disease is extremely common in California and around the country. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that half of American adults aged 30 and over have periodontal disease.
If you don’t make flossing a habit, and your gums become sore, swollen, and tender, it could result in gum disease. The good news is that, unlike tooth decay, gum disease can be reversed with improved oral hygiene.
It is essential to correctly use dental floss to remove plaque and food particles from between the teeth:
Cut a length of floss about 18 inches long.
Securely wind each end around your middle fingers.
Take hold of the floss with your forefinger and thumb leaving about two inches to work with.
Thread the floss between two teeth.
Hold the floss tightly against the side of the tooth and move it up and away from the gumline. You want to clean the space between the tooth and gum without pulling more gum tissue away, so it’s vital to scrape up and out of the pocket.
Move the floss around the tooth to clean every surface—especially those that your brush can’t reach. As you use a section of floss, unwind from one hand to access a clean piece. With 18 inches, you should have enough to provide a clean section for every tooth. If you run out, that’s okay. Just toss the used piece and cut a new one.
Some people find it easier to start on one end on the upper teeth and clean each gap one by one until they reach the end on the opposite side. Then repeat for the bottom row. Whatever operation you decide on, make sure you clean around every tooth, including the back surfaces of the last molars.
What if you continue flossing for a few weeks and still experience bleeding? Call Mirelez Wellness Dental to schedule a consultation. We will complete a comprehensive examination to determine the cause of the bleeding.

Dental cleanings increase the effectiveness of your daily oral care by removing the plaque and tarter that can accumulate regardless of daily brushing and flossing. In fact, when plaque hardens, it can only be removed with the special tools used by a hygienist.
A hygienist will first use a vibrating ultrasonic tool to dislodge the largest pieces of tartar. This process may tickle a bit. The hygienist will then use tools with finer attachments to remove the smaller pieces of calculus. When all plaque and tartar is gone, polishing is the final step in the cleaning process.
The goal is to make your tooth surfaces as smooth as possible, to prevent food particles from lodging in tiny spaces that are difficult to clean. If you are having an exam during the same visit, your technician may take dental x-rays. X-rays can reveal cavities while they are small and can be easily filled.
Let your hygienist know if your teeth are sensitive so he/she can make your cleaning as comfortable as possible. After the cleaning, a fluoride treatment may be given to help strengthen your teeth.
Before your hygienist leaves, you may want to ask if there are areas you can improve. Your hygienist can tell you which tooth surfaces had the most build-up. If the back teeth are presenting a problem, you can meet with Dr. Mirelez about sealants.
If you have braces, you may want more frequent dental cleanings because food can easily lodge between the wires.

Dental patients know that regular brushing and flossing are essential for optimal oral health. However, the bristles of your toothbrush can’t reach into every small groove and depression in your teeth, especially the really bumpy back teeth. That’s where sealants from Mirelez Wellness Dental in Fresno can be invaluable.
Dental sealants are a plastic material that is applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, mainly in the pits and fissures. The plastic acts as a shield against acids and plaque that can damage the enamel.
Many Fresno residents might think that sealants are only for children and teenagers, but they can actually be beneficial for adults as well. If you are wondering if sealants are right for you, speak with your Medera, Selma, or Oakhurst dentist. This simple dental procedure can improve your oral health by protecting the surfaces that are particularly vulnerable to decay.
Many CA – California dental insurance providers include dental sealants as a covered benefit, so check with your provider if you are considering them. If you don’t have dental insurance, ask us about financing options. Because they can prevent cavities, dental sealants can save you money in the long run.
At Mirelez Wellness Dental in Fresno, we provide dental sealants, plus family and cosmetic dentistry. Make an appointment today.

The world of dentistry continues to advance at a rapid pace. If you have visited Mirelez Wellness Dental, your Fresno dentist, you have probably noticed some things that make your visit more comfortable, such as the ability to watch TV or listen to music while receiving treatment.
What may not be as obvious are the advances in techniques, tools and materials. Top dentists now use digital computer imaging which is safer than traditional x-rays. Dental technicians can store, retrieve and transmit digital images much easier than was possible with traditional x-ray film.
The use of lasers has also changed the face of dentistry. Laser surgery requires less anesthesia, minimizes swelling, and protects surrounding tissue. We can use lasers to detect and treat cavities, and dental technicians use them for the curing of restorative materials.
Another exciting development in cosmetic dentistry is the CAD-CAM technology that allows cosmetic dentists to perform restorations in a single visit. The types of procedures that can be completed in one visit include crowns, fillings, inlays, onlays and veneers.

There is nothing particularly mysterious about cosmetic dentistry, as practiced at Mirelez Wellness Dental in Fresno. And yet, certain myths about it prevail. We’ll try to spike a few here:
Myth #1: Cosmetic Dentistry is Never Necessary for a Healthy Smile
Many so-called cosmetic dental procedures are not solely cosmetic. Some, such as tooth replacement, prevent many potential problems such as tooth movement, bone loss and difficulty chewing and speaking.
Myth #2: A Dental Bridge is the Only Way to Replace a Missing Tooth
Dental bridges have been used for many years with success. However, dental implants are often a better choice for replacing one or more missing teeth. Dental implants have many vital advantages. They feel like natural teeth, they are stronger, and they are easier to clean than dental bridges. Implants can also be used to anchor dentures or partial dentures.
Myth #3: At-Home Kits are as Effective for Tooth Whitening Than a Professional Dental Solution
At Mirelez Wellness Dental, we offer our dental patients teeth whitening treatments that are generally more effective than at-home kits. At-home kits may remove surface stains, but they do not provide best results and can often lead to uneven coloring.
Myth #4: Dental Bonding is the Best Way to Fix a Chipped Tooth.
Dental bonding can restore the shape of a tooth, but may not be the best long-term solution. If you have a damaged tooth, you may be a good candidate for porcelain veneers.
Myth #5: Braces are the Only Way to Correct Crooked Teeth
Braces are often part of a transforming dental makeover for teens and adults alike. However, if your teeth are only slightly crooked, lumineers can reshape your teeth and help you achieve a sensational smile.
